A Baka Test AU where the group plays D&D:

Yuuji: The DM, because he wanted to find new ways of tormenting Akihisa with. He's never DM'ed before but has read up a shitton on it so he can find any way to bend the rules and make sure that Aki suffers. Any complaints will be brushed off with "I am the DM, I make the rules."

Akihisa: Your local half elf wizard. He rolled exceptionally shitty on all his stats (and blamed Yuuji for giving him staged dices). He proceeds the shitty rolls throughout the whole campaign, and has the highest near-death rate of the whole party. By far.

Minami: The most butch half Orc woman you’ve ever seen. She wanted to play a barbarian for the convenience, and during character creation made sure to emphasize that her boobs are massive. Yuuji made her roll for it, and she rolled a nat 1. Bonus: After that roll, Aki was almost strangled with his own socks for laughing at her bad luck. She makes it a point to hurt his character a lot in the campaign.

Himeji: An adorable Halfling or Gnome Druid with pink cotton candy hair. At first she didn’t know what class to play as, but when Yuuji told her that she can change into animals as a Druid she chose that quick as the wind. She rolls surprisingly well and crits a lot. She has a tame bunnyrabbit named Punyuu, or something in the likes.

Hideyoshi: The party healer, who play as an Elven Cleric (later multiclasses as Bard). That One Party Member™ who’s 110% into character and has a long elaborate backstory that bring the rest of the party to tears. Has figured out a voice and accent for his character and uses it even when the party consults their plan out of character. Bonus: Though he set “male” as his character’s gender, the first roll Aki made was to “use his magical powers” to turn him into a female. It was the first and only nat 20 Aki ever rolled. DM Yuuji was way to shocked to even protest.

Kouta: Plays a rogue/assassin type character, and is the only human in the party. Though he rolled exceptionally well and has very high stats he basically never uses any attacks, and spends every initiative with rolling perception checks for any panty-shots. Yuuji stopped protesting after five sessions and just let it happen. Somehow he also carries the most riches of them all. Nobody knows how or why.

Shouko: Only in the party because she “insisted”, and Yuuji didn’t dare turning her down. She plays as a Tiefling Paladin, and when Yuuji asked her for what god, she looked straight at him with a blush and said “the DM”. Yuuji wasn’t impressed but tried go around it by making up a close-to-DM god in the universe.

Women abusing men in pop culture: Why is it taken so lightly?

We all know how horrible it is when us women are physically, emotionally and mentally abused by men. But when a man suffers the same with the woman being an abuser, why is it taken lightly and brushed off? 

For many years, domestic violence has mostly focused on women as the victims and men as the perpetrators. If the domestic violence case involves a man as the victim, it goes unnoticed because men refuse to report it otherwise they will be embarrased, ridiculed or mocked for their struggles. 

Men who report domestic abuse will face a social stigma regarding their lack of machismo and other denigrations of their masculinity. And not just that, they end up being accused of abusing the woman they are in relationship with or they are forced to be separated from their kids if they want to leave their abusive wives.

When men are expected to take responsibility for their actions, no excuses are accepted, but when the women are the perpetrators of the abuse, they are given the excuses such as: stress, menopause etc. 

Why can’t men report abuse?

There are many reasons as to why men can’t file a domestic violence case against their abusers which are:

Fear of not being believed

Fear of not being able to see their kids

Fear of being accused for the abuse due to society prejudices

Fear of revenge by the abuser

Fear of the abuser making fake allegations against him in order to look more innocent.

Fear of being left homeless

There are even long lasting effects of the victims of female-on-male abuse which are:

Low self-esteem

Anger

Depression

Anxiety

Loneliness

Sleeping Problems

Substance Abuse

When Domestic Abuse against Men is brushed off in the media.

There have been countless depictions of domestic abuse in the media, with both female and male victims. But when it’s the female victim, it’s a serious matter, but when it’s a male victim, either people laugh at it or treat it as justifiable or treat the female abuser as some sort of a “ feminist girlboss”.

Mostly in Anime when a female character abuses a man, it’s treated as comedy. Most of the scenarios involve them accidentally walking in on them changing or accidentally crashing into their bodies unintentionally and then they get beaten up for it and are falsely accused of being a “pervert”. The anime Baka To Test To Shokanjuu perfectly sums this up when the lead female characters bullies and humiliates the main male characters. Minami and Shouko are the biggest examples when they are shown physically abusing their boyfriends for smallest mistakes they make.

This happens a lot in TV shows as well, mostly in comedies. Like in Two and a Half Men, which sends a toxic message that “men will be men”, it also shows that Judith is a much bigger bastard like them, possibly a sociopath. She divorces Alan out of boredom, then proceeds to financially and mentally abuse him for sadistic pleasure and frames him for being a horrible father to Jake. She hates it whenever Alan shows a bit of independence and goes out of her way to make sure he will be miserable forever. She does it again with her new husband Herb, who is only flaw is being nice to everyone around him and still misuses his trust and uses him as her personal punching bag. Honestly, I wished the show would’ve ended with her ending up alone and homeless for everything she did.

Another example of this was in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Before there was Amy Dunne from Gone Girl, there was Janet. when Will begins dating his friend Jazz’s sister and while they are at a restaurant, she drops her sweet facade to reveal herself as a tyrannical sociopath who controls Will based on what he eats, where will he go to college and what will he do with his life. When he tells Uncle Phil and Aunt Viv, they brush it off. But one day when Carlton tells her off about what a horrible human being she is, she immediately becomes polite and drawn to him. So the message that they showed here is that it’s the guy’s fault if they don’t stand up for themselves, while his controlling girlfriend gets away with irreversibly ruining the lives of almost everyone who didn’t meet her expectations.

A bigger example of female-on-male abuse in dramatic shows was in the series Mr. Robot.

In the series, Angela Moss is the best friend/crush of the protagonist Elliot Alderson. Her only goal in life is to get justice for her mother’s death at the hands of E Corp and become the most powerful woman in the world. While it’s understandable that she is stuck in a male-dominated workplace and how the E Corp CTO and her ex-boyfriend treated her badly, she begins to misuse her victim mentality and ends up getting brainwashed by Whiterose. She then begins to psychologically abuse and gaslight Elliot in order to complete Stage 2 and not just that, she even emotionally abuses him when he finds out and plays the victim in this entire debacle, she sees not listening to Elliot and Darlene when he tries to warn her about the Stage 2 bombings as her personal “feminist” moment. And then weeks after the attack, due to her clinging onto her beliefs about Whiterose’s machine, she begins to blame Elliot for manipulating her into telling him about Whiterose’s plan when she herself was the one doing the same thing to him. While Whiterose’s manipulation was mostly the main reason for this, another part of it was probably because she was jealous of how Elliot was the “chosen one” in taking down E Corp and wanted to punish him for it and take over the mantle.

Most of the fans saw her actions as “sympathetic” and “justifiable”, with some of them calling her treatment of Elliot, who was nothing but kind to her the entire time, a “feminist girlboss move” and overlooked the fact that she psychologically tortured Elliot and reminded him that he was worthless and nobody was going to love him, not even Angela herself. Even if there were some fans who called her out for doing this and pointed out how horrible it was, others would brush their opinions off as “misogynistic” and “sexist” because “they apparently don’t like seeing a powerful corporate woman.”

Angela even kinda represented a privileged white feminist who believed that she was the only one struggling with issues and had bigger problems than anyone else, overlooking the fact that her friends that were on the lower position than her and brushed them off because her issues were more traumatic than theirs.

It even further showed a lot of double standard of Angela and Elliot manipulating someone to do their job. While both actions were horrible, Elliot got a lot of hate and scrutiny for blackmailing Olivia and drugging her coffee with the drugs she tried to stay clean from, calling it as something he “crossed a line in”. But when Angela almost did the same thing with him and drugged him as well, it was treated as “sympathetic” and “heroic” by the fans and treated her as some sort of a “feminist” for it, overlooking the fact that she was abusing a man to the point he almost lost his self esteem. At some point I even saw someone say that Angela did “nothing wrong” at all and didn’t like how Elliot was in season 3, was it because he was trying to stop her from going through with an attack that could kill thousands? Did they expect him to stay silent, not stand up for himself and let Angela stomp him a lot?

Conclusion

Abuse is something which is extremely serious, whether it’s a female or male victim. Like the female victims, men too deserve to have their voices heard and taken seriously if something terrible happens to them and we should believe them.

What was the first japanese novel that you've read, how long did it took you to finish it and what was the number of pages? (Bonus: Many furigana or no?)

The first Japanese novel I ever read was called マジカルストーンを探そう！Search for the Magical Stone! It was 200 pages YES FURIGANA and it took me ONE YEAR to read the whole thing (I read 1-2 pages a day some days). The second novel I read was Baka to Test to Shokanjuu which was 300 pages and took 1 month to finish. I think the first novel is always the hardest! But its worth it ;; thank you for the question!!

Gender Coding and Localization

You ever notice that in most media, the ways LGBT people are depicted are usually not in the positive light. The same can be applied in the anime community where gender roles play a very heavy part in characters. In a majority of anime, fathers are usually the breadwinners of the home, mothers are usually housewives, and the children, usually high schoolers, have their own archetypes that may differ based on their gender. So how are members of the LGBT community usually represented?

Many gay and lesbian characters are usually portrayed similarly, as over sexualized, imitating the extreme characteristics of the other gender. This is the standard in most media outside of Japan as well. However, there are many instances when it is taken way too far, beyond the realm of realism. As such, the introduction of traps and reverse-traps are introduced. Traps are males that have an overly feminine appearance and reverse traps are female component. They still identify as their biological gender despite having an appearance that would be classified as the other. These are common concepts in anime and blur the line of who is gay or lesbian and what constitutes as such.

The concept of traps are often used for the purpose of comedy and tend to mock the LGBT issues. In one such anime, Baka to Test to Shokanjuu, there is a male character, Hideyoshi, that is often mistaken for a female. Being unable to properly use either bath or bathroom, they decide to make a the Hideyoshi bath and bathroom, similar to the gender neutral bathrooms today. The purpose of this was for humor, saying that Hideyoshi didn’t belong in either bath. As a light-hearted anime, it was not meant to be offensive. However, the way trans issues are depicted as comical and make it a bit questionable today.

Trans people in general usually get the shaft in anime when it comes to their gender role. As mentioned before, they are usually thought of as a source of comedic relief. They are represented similarly to how transvestites are depicted in our culture. In addition, cross-dressing is commonplace in the world of anime which further reduces in the importance of a trans person’s internal issue. This may be due to the restriction of women in Japanese Kabuki theaters which resulted in many men cross-dressing to play female parts. Outside of yaoi and yuri, LGBT people are usually used as comic relief.

Despite being a Japanese product, anime is no longer just restricted to Japan. The United States have always localized anime since the 60’s but hasn’t had much popularity. It wasn’t until the 90’s when a wave of anime hit the US markets and it became a more popular medium. Several channels released anime with English localized dub that ended up changing the meaning of several important characters and plot. One such change was made in Sailor Moon.

Many viewers growing up in the United States watching Sailor Moon may not know that two characters, Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune, were actually in a romantic relationship. They were one of the few canon lesbian couples to be shown at the time. However, upon the localization of Sailor Moon in the United States, these two characters were changed to cousins. During this time, America also had, and still has, its fair share of misrepresented gender identities. This was a very controversial change due to the more provocative actions taken by the two character. Though they wanted to change their characters to very caring cousins, many people saw their actions crossing the line and it lead more to incest rather than caring cousins.

Today, localization is different, trying to be a more direct translation. The only exceptions are usually series with content that is offensive today. One example of this is the video game “Fire Emblem Fates”. Though not an anime or manga directly, I believe it is appropriate to talk about its localization due to the fact that the game was written by a manga writer and had many anime influences.

In Fire Emblem Fates, your character was allowed to have a gay/lesbian relationship with certain characters, a first in Fire Emblem history. However, the mistake was made that the conversation with another certain character lead people to call the game homophobic. In this Japanese version of the conversation, one character was confused on their disability to talk to the other sex and the main character made a potion that would make that easier. This was seen as gay conversion and many people found offense to this. As a result, this conversation was changed when localized. Despite receiving quite a bit of backlash due to the lack of a direct translation, I believe this was the right action due to the respect people should have for their gender.

Representation of the LGBT community has always been a tough road for both Japan and the United States. They are usually regarded as comic relief in some sense or oversexualized object. However, there are certain gems of anime that do deal with these struggles and can more accurately depict the issues. Both the United States and Japan have made progress with the subject of LGBT but for now, they still have a long way to go.
